(Clean Ocean Sailing) – Plastic free Rivers & Sea’sClean Ocean Sailing (COS) is an award-winning volunteer organisation taking direct action to improve the marine environment around Cornwall. COS conducts carbon-neutral sailing clean-up expeditions around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly aboard a 117-year-old sailing vessel to an otherwise inaccessible coastline. In doing so, COS contributes to the creation of a circular economy around marine plastics, striving to raise awareness about the Ocean Crisis and its consequences for local, national, and global communities. Clean Ocean Sailing is determined to tackle the root causes of ocean biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change through coastal clean-up missions.
“We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. So far, we have recovered over 70 tons of marine waste. Our central message is to Rethink, Reduce, Recover, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle the marine plastic devastating our marine environment. COS activities are achievable by all, encouraging people from every walk of life to join in and empowering them to make a positive difference.”
Sam
Forest Ecologist + WriterSam Manning is a forest ecologist and environmental writer who has worked in the UK conservation sector for over fifteen years, on the frontline struggle to restore Britain’s ailing and lost forest ecosystems. Through his work, the author is leading the conversation on our emerging understanding of the environmental connections between oceans and forests, while challenging the status quo of failing nature conservation policy and practice in the UK, advocating for holistic, ecosystem approaches to restoring our natural world.
Sam will be offering informative talks/presentations within the Helford Riverscape, about his vital work focused on researching, sharing awareness of the ‘Flowscape’, and with that, vital connective processes and cycles among forest and seas.
Sam is currently supporting our founder, Emmeline, in the development of our Rights of Nature approach.
Emily
Marine Biologist “I am a marine conservation scientist with more than a decade of research. My passion lies in combining high-quality science and conservation with community engagement. I really enjoy working collaboratively and building capacity within partner organisations to deliver positive and lasting change for both the environment and communities.
I have been privileged to work in some awe-inspiring places across the world. Yet, for me still the Helford riverscape remains especially dear to me; it has held a very special place in my heart for a long time. I feel honoured to be a VoW science guardian, being able to use my skills and knowledge I have developed through my career to help protect a place that I believe holds such ecological, cultural, and spiritual significance within my local community.”
Alongside Sam, Emily is currently supporting our founder Emmeline in the development of our Rights of Nature approach.
